A one-day course, delivered in collaboration with Strathclyde University, which will review new developments in nanotechnology as applied to IVDs, including lab-on-a-chip devices, DNA chips, nanoarrays, etc.

2. e-Beam Based Tools for Device/Materials Characterization (FIB-TEM), 7-18 September 2008, Haifa, Israel [...details]

This two week training course is based on lectures on electron-matter interaction, which will provide the basis for applied use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), focused ion beam (FIB), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy/wavelength dispersive spectroscopy (EDS/WDS) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS).

Morning lectures will be supplemented with hands-on training in the use of SEM, FIB, and TEM. This includes specimen preparation for TEM.

Experiments involving HRSEM and FIB include: channeling contrast, localized electron/ion induced deposition, enhanced etching, cross-section SEM specimen preparation, H-bar TEM specimen preparation, and Lift-Out TEM specimen preparation.

Experiments involving TEM include: conventional (diffraction contrast) TEM, STEM, HRTEM and EFTEM.

3. Event INSIDE POReS: 1st International Workshop NAPEN 2008, 12 - 15 October 2008, Crete, Greece [...details]

Organized by three European Networks of Excellence in the field of nanoporous materials: IDECAT, INSIDE-PORES and NANOMEMPRO

Leading academic and industrial researchers will present the recent advances and the expected breakthroughs in the field of nanoporous membranes, catalysts and sorbents, including advanced characterization and simulation techniques and applications in energy and environment.

Poster sessions will complement the plenary and invited lectures and selected papers will be published as a special issue of the Journal of Microporous and Mesoporous Materials.

The SEIC at Loughborough will be hosting the UK’s first conference dedicated to Modelling & Simulation for Micro and Nano Technology on the 22nd October 2008. The conference will provide a focal point for researchers, designers, manufacturers and product integrators to address the key issues currently facing modelling and simulation capabilities and developments.

5. STIMESI Course on MEMS Design and INTEGRAMplus Prototyping Services, 10-13 November 2008   [...details]

This 4-day course is free to participants from universities or institutes from within Europe and for a nominal fee to others. The fifth instance of this popular course will be held at the the Slovak University of Technology (Bratislava, Slovakia).

The goal of the STIMESI Training Action is to stimulate European universities and research institutes to adopt MEMS and SiP technologies. The fifth running of this course will be given by a combination of academic experts, industrial designers and software developers. The course objectives are to:

• Introduce MEMS and the key concepts of micro-mechanics, including the use of standard equations to analyse a range of simple mechanical devices and their properties
• Provide awareness of common transduction methods and how to extract signals from MEMS sensors
• Explain methods to help participants design and analyse MEMS devices, culminating in a basic grasp of multi-physics design tools and when and how to use them.
• Explain INTEGRAMplus silicon MEMS process flows and design rules to enable design with confidence
• Introduce multi-domain and multi-technology integration
• Provide familiarity with major CAD tools for MEMS in the EUROPRACTICE Software Service (L-Edit for layout and CoventorWare for MEMS design) and associated INTEGRAMplus support modules
• Reinforce learning through practical case studies and worked examples based on simple devices
• Support participants to develop their own design ideas and practical implementations in INTEGRAMplus processes

1. Nanoforum 2008, Milan, Italy, 17-18 September 2008 [...details]

The plenary sessions and tutorials covering a wide range of topics such as nanotechnologies for energy and the environment, nanomedicine, automotive and aerospace will be held in English or Italian. In addition, a number of companies and organisations involved in nanotechnologies will present themselves in the framework of an exhibition.

Now in its fourth year, the Nanoforum continues to promote new possibilities offered by nanotechnologies and to encourage the process of technological transfer from the academic world to the entrepreneurial one. The event is addressed at entrepreneurs, managers in the research, development, production, promotion and marketing departments, researchers, specialists and university graduates interested in nanotechnologies.

2. ECOC 2008 in Brussels Expo, Belgium, 21- 25 September 2008 [...details]

ECOC is the largest conference on optical communication in Europe. 4. EPoSS Annual Forum 2008, 1- 2 October 2008, Nice, France [...details]

The first day of this high level event is dedicated to the EPoSS General Assembly for EPoSS members. Topics will include: strategic decisions on the path towards the JTI, future activities on European and international level, co-operation models for EU-funded national projects.

On the second day all interested stakeholders are invited to join in on a day of intensive discussions and exchange of ideas in the field of smart systems integration. One major topic of the Forum will be to inform on and to discuss about the current developments towards the future EPoSS JTI. In particular procedures, technology priorities, and implementation options will be discussed. High level representative from industry as well as from the European Commission will present the latest achievements in the field.

Registration form to the Forum will be available at the EPoSS site in August.

5. Brokerage Event, 23 - 25 October 2008, Moscow, Russia [...details]

Photonics is one of the subjects covered by the brokerage event. Participants from industry, research organisations and universities from both European and Russian sides will have the opportunity to present their organisation, the research interests and the cooperation sought with the other side. 20 speakers from each side (i.e. about 40 speakers in total) will each have a 10 minute slot for this, as well as opportunities for bilateral meetings on all 3 days.
