3. Course: RF MEMS and NEMS, 15 February 2007, Lausanne (CH), EPFL [...details]

The course aims to give the attendants a basic knowledge about state-of-the-art RF MEMS including technology, device architecture, design and modeling, scalability, figures of merit and RF IC novel functionality and performance. Reliability and packaging will be discussed as key issues for industrial applications.

The course intends to addresses a wide range of R&D staff, PhD candidates and/or engineers from institutes or universities, marketing and business development managers of companies active or interested in RF MEMS.

  • Capacitive and contact RF switches: architecture, technology, electromechanical and RF design and modelling, performance, reliability and advanced packaging.
  • RF MEMS passives as replacement candidates for off-chip components: architectures of tunable and/or programmable capacitors and high-Q suspended inductors for RF ICs. Figures of merit and CMOS compatibility.
  • MEMS resonators and FBARs for key RF circuit functions: filtering, mixing and frequency reference. Design, technology, scalability and performance. Resonator arrays as key enabler for circuit applications.
  • Resonant-gate MOS transistor: (i) ultra-abrupt hybrid-MEMS switch, (ii) hybrid MEMS resonator with intrinsic gain and (iii) capacitor-less memory cell.
  • RF MEMS circuit applications: programmable/switchable filter banks, impedance tuners, all-MEMS RF front-end receiver and programmable delay lines.
  • RF NEMS: technology and signal/noise handling challenges. Silicon nanowires versus Carbon Nanotubes for advanced NEMS-based signal processing
