1. INTEGRAMplus Launch Workshop “Big Business from Small Beginnings”, 10 November 2006, Malvern, UK

The launch workshop is aimed at existing MEMS/microsystems practitioners as well as users with no knowledge of microsystems looking for product innovation. Speakers confirmed so far will be representatives of European Commission (DGINFSO), QinetiQ, CSEM, Coventor, Epigem, IMM, Lancaster University, Yole Développement. Poster sessions will also be organised.

The aim of the Workshop is to provide participants with information on: the INTEGRAMplus project, its context within EUROPRACTICE and prospects for the forthcoming Framework 7 Programme; the competencies of the partners; the goals of the project including targeted demonstrators; market prospects in life sciences and integrated microsystems; progress on development of CAD tools, prototyping platforms and technology convergence, including case studies of product development; the INTEGRAMplus offer and access mechanism; and to provide networking opportunities for future collaborative projects.

2. PATENT-DfMM and NEXUS MWG Reliability and Test Workshop, 27-28 November 2006, Milan, Italy (Details...)

This “NEXUS Methodology Working Group (MWG) in Reliability and Test” was launched in December 2005 in close collaboration with the PATENT-DfMM project and MEMS Industry Group (MIG) in the US. A joint public workshop is planned with the following topics:

3. Conference "Safety & Security Systems in Europe", 27-28 November 2006, Potsdam, Germany (Details...)

The political, economical and technological changes through the globalisation causes a series of positive new developments and impulses, but also new risks and threats. Especially since 11/9 the question of security against terrorism and crime and the safety of infrastructures and (public) utilities is on the top of the agenda in Europe.

The new 7th Framework Programme for Research and Development of the European Commission has therefore conceded the research on safety and security as high priority. We therefore invite you to join the international conference “Safety and Security in Europe”, organised by the Innovation Relay Centre Northern Germany, represented by the GOSPEL member VDI/VDE-IT.
The international conference is addressed to technology-oriented enterprises and research institutions in the area of security and safety. The 2-day conference includes a brokerage event.

Conference Themes: Security research in the FP7 should develop new technologies and knowledge needed to ensure the security of citizens from threats such as terrorism and organised crime, while respecting fundamental human rights. The S³ Programme Committee invites papers in the following topics:

  • border security
  • critical infrastructure protection
  • restoring security after crisis
  • logistic and supply chain security
  • security of mass transportation
These complex topics include:
  • sensors of all relevant types, e.g. gas sensors, IR-cameras, THz-technology, remote sensors;
  • embedded systems for signal and image processing, pattern recognition, data reduction and communication;
  • identification technologies, e.g. RFID, biometrics;
  • system concepts for surveillance of critical objects or areas;

4. Nano2Life Research School, 15-20 January 2007, Neuchatel, Switzerland (Details...)

The Research school is part of the N2L integrated curriculum intends to provide a training for last year graduate students and postdoctoral scientists in the field of nanobiotechnologies. As such, the participation fees of the participating young scientists is supported by the network. The school is multidisciplinary, interactive, and innovative, learning skills in how to address challenges. Lectures on basic and applied science are combined with interactive sessions on ethics, IPR, the FP7 program of the commission, fundrising.

The focus of the first research school held in Grenoble between 19-23 June 2006, was centered around local expertise and competence, namely: In vitro diagnostics and analytical nanobiosystems. On site technical visits of high tech companies and research labs allowed the participants to exchange experience and reflect on the way of: developing their academic and/or industrial career (including creation of a start-ups) and managing research projects, on the way upstream of their research.

14 participants attended the first school, which has been evaluated as being intensive, challenging, useful and very interesting. 92% of the participants is recommending the school to any interested.

The second N2L Research School will be held in Neuchatel, Switzerland, between 15-19 January 2007, and will focus on Neuroengineering.

Participation applications should be submitted latest by 30th November, 2006.

5. GOSPEL Workshop: "Bioinspired Signal Processing", 24 - 26 January 2007, Barcelona, Spain. (Details...)

The focus of the workshop is on signal processing inspired on the olfactory system. However, the workshop is also open to more general contributions related to biological/artificial olfaction and signal processing inspired on other sensory modalities.

The workshop will include the following topics:

  • Bioinspired algorithms for olfactory data processing.
  • Computational models of olfaction.
  • Biosensors based on olfactory proteins/neurons.
  • Electronic Noses Instrumentation: Soft/Hard design.
  • Signal & Data Processing.

Physics Faculty, Universitat de Barcelona.

Abstracts must be received by December 1st, 2006. Accepted authors will be notified by December 20th, 2006.

2. FP7 launch conference, 16- 17 November 2006, Warsaw, Poland (Details...)

The conference will present information about the aims, rules of participation, budget and structure of FP7. The event will facilitate working relationships between research and industrial teams interested in creating consortia and preparing projects for FP7.

In addition, the conference will be an opportunity to summarise the participation of Polish teams in the sixth Framework Programme and recognise the most active and successful participants.

4. 3rd International Nanotechnology Conference on Communications and Cooperation, 16-19 April 2007, Brussels, Belgium (Details...)

For the third year in a row, global senior researchers, industry leaders and policy makers will gather at the International Nanotechnology Conference on Communication and Cooperation. In 2007, Brussels, the heart of Europe, will be the communal ground for in-depth discussions and technical sessions on a variety of issues related to the future of international collaboration in nanotechnologies.

In order to further strengthen the continuous dialogue between Europe, Japan and the United States, broad regional overviews will be combined with detailed presentations from each of the regions.

Technical sessions will highlight today’s state of affairs and tomorrow’s challenges and bottlenecks regarding various related domains in nanoelectronics and explore the links with related areas, such as biotechnology, advanced materials development, microsystems and photonics.

A topical session will highlight the economical and societal implications of nanotechnology.
